Air Quality Emergency: How Fossil Fuels Are Poisoning Our Lungs and Warming Our Planet

1 min read

In 2026, the WHO estimates that 99% of the world's population breathes air that exceeds its recommended limits for fine particulate matter. Fossil fuel combustion is responsible for over 80% of PM2.5 pollution globally, making the case for an energy transition simultaneously a climate and a public health imperative.

The South Asian Air Crisis

Seventeen of the world's twenty most polluted cities are in India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. Delhi's winter smog regularly reaches PM2.5 levels 30 to 40 times above the WHO safe limit. A 2026 study estimated that air pollution reduces life expectancy in northern India by an average of 8 years. Children growing up in these environments suffer permanently stunted lung development.

Short-Lived Climate Pollutants: The Quick Win

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition estimates that cutting short-lived climate pollutants — methane, black carbon, and hydrofluorocarbons — could reduce warming by 0.5 degrees Celsius by 2050 while preventing 2.4 million premature deaths per year from air pollution. This is the most powerful and immediate health-climate co-benefit available.
